Cockfighting in Afghanistan

Categories: Animals

Cockfighting, known in Afghan as "Murgh Jangi", is a popular form of entertainment among Afghans during the winter season, which was banned during the Taliban's rule. Specially grown fighting cocks compete in fights that consist of 4-6 rounds. Each round lasts from 10 to 20 minutes with an interval of 5 minutes. In these fights, some Afghans earn fortunes by local standards, because the bets on the fights reach 100,000-200,000 afghani, which is approximately equal to 2000-4000 US dollars. The tradition of cockfighting in Afghanistan is very strong and ancient, their history goes back to 4000 BC. Cockfighting has become a national tradition in Afghanistan.
