Microwaves, food processors, dishwashers and more. These household appliances are constantly nearby and we use them almost automatically. At the same time, rarely does anyone think about the fact that each of these electrical appliances poses a threat to health and even life. A simple washing machine operating in the bathroom can cause tragedy.
If you take a bath or shower near a running washing machine, you can die. Even high-quality appliances connected to an outlet are potentially dangerous, and tragic incidents in bathrooms and showers happen all the time. But what threatens us with a device that is absolutely in good working order, connected by a specialist in compliance with all norms and regulations?
There is a mortal danger if the bathtub or the outlet to which the household appliances are connected is not grounded. Not a single electrical device, even the highest quality, is immune from such a phenomenon as breakdown. In this case, current passes through the insulation of the conductor and because of this, the body of the washing machine becomes energized.
In this case, the water in the bathroom may also be energized. To do this, it is not even necessary that the washing machine be located next to the bathtub or shower. When we wash, the air becomes saturated with moisture and steam comes out. Moist air can become a conductor of electricity, causing an electric shock.
When a bath or shower stall is grounded, the discharge goes through the conductor into the ground and there is no threat to life. But you shouldn’t relax, even if there is grounding. For it to work effectively, it must be installed by a specialist. In addition, in a humid environment it can be destroyed by corrosion and simply not work. Therefore, it is better to play it safe and do laundry when no one is using the bathroom.
Typically the ground looks like a wire attached to a metal tub underneath. It is better to position the washing machine so that it does not come into contact with the bathtub bowl or shower tray. Additional protection can be provided by an RCD - residual current device. It is installed into the electrical circuit by an electrician. The purpose of this device is to turn off the electricity a split second before an electric shock occurs.
Unfortunately, not everyone knows how insidious electricity is. Therefore, electric shock is one of the most common causes of death.
