1. And the day after Christmas, thousands of Americans went to the shooting ranges to try out these "toys" in action.

2. At one of these ranges — Twin Ponds Rifle Range in Auendo, South Carolina — photographer Patrick Hall was waiting for the happy owners of brand new pistols and rifles.

3. During the photo shoots, he used a huge American flag as a background and a smoke generator to create an appropriate atmosphere.

4. The result is portraits of men, women and children holding various types of weapons that can only be bought in the United States without special permission.

5. "Everyone who was photographed was extremely delighted with the pictures and each portrait has its own character… It is obvious that the policy regarding the possession of weapons and Second amendment to The Constitution of the United States in modern society is a highly debated topic," says the photographer.

6. "My goal was not to take any particular side in this dispute with these portraits - I just wanted to take pictures of various groups of gun owners from different walks of life and how they enjoy their hobby after Christmas."

7. And the large volumes of arms sales in the United States in 2015, compared with the past years, are probably explained by the recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino and Paris.
