The main stadium of the 2018 Olympics for $ 105 million will be demolished immediately after the Games

From February 9 to 25, 2018, the XXIII Winter Olympic Games will be held in Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea. And the Olympic stadium has recently been completed, where the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games will be held. As it turned out, this is a temporary structure for 35 thousand seats — after the Paralympics in March 2018, the arena will be dismantled. In its place, a museum and other places for entertainment will appear in the center of Pyeongchang.

At first, the organizers planned to hold the opening and closing ceremonies at a large stadium in one of the nearest cities — this turned out to be more economical. The fact is that the budget of the Olympics has grown to $ 12.4 billion, which is one and a half times the amount that Seoul predicted in 2011, when the Korean bid won.

But the residents of Pyeongchang did not understand the idea of moving the ceremony to another city — and the organizing committee conceded.

The Olympic Stadium was built in 22 months. According to the latest data of the organizing committee, it cost $ 105 million, although the figures were predicted to be more modest — 78 million. This is a seven—storey complex (another level is underground) in the shape of a pentagon. Each corner symbolizes the key goal of the 2018 Games: cultural Games, eco-friendly Games, economical Games, Games for the World and Information Technology Games.

The total area of the facility and the adjacent territory is 240 thousand square meters. The medal square is located next to the arena — in addition to the award ceremonies, exhibitions, performances and other events will be held there daily.

In the history of the Olympics, it was not so often that a stadium was built exclusively for celebrations: in 1992 in Albertville (the territory subsequently went to the college sports complex) and in 2014 in Sochi.

Sochi's Fisht Stadium, which hosted the 2014 Games, was never used in its original form after opening and closing. The reconstruction for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, in fact, presented another object. Only the name remained the same.
