The largest pyramid in the world is not located in Egypt at all

Since school, we remember that the largest pyramid in the world is located in Egypt and is called the Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) or the Great Pyramid of Giza. Yes, among the Egyptian pyramids, it is probably the largest. But, it turns out, there are even more amazing structures. 

Not far from the Mexican city of Puebla on a huge hill stands the Catholic Church of the Blessed Virgin the Comforter. But this hillock is not a freak of nature at all, but an ancient pyramid of the Toltec tribe. It is called Cholula or Tlachiualtepetl (Nahuatl — "man-made mountain") and surpasses the pyramid of Cheops in volume twice, and in the area of the base - four times.

It is unknown who built this pyramid 2,300 years ago and whether the ancient builders knew that the clay they used would help plants eventually hide the pyramid from the eyes.

Hernan Cortez did not notice the pyramid at the time, destroying one city with a population after another. And the locals discovered it only in 1910. 

To date, the Cholula pyramid is considered one of the largest buildings in the history of mankind. By design, it is similar to the pyramid of the Sun. 

Its height reached 63 meters. The side of each of the bases was half a kilometer. The volume of construction was 3 million cubic meters. 

Archaeologists have discovered more than 400 human burials inside and around the pyramid, suggesting that it was used as a place of worship and sacrifice. 

The pyramid was abandoned around the VII or VIII century.
