The Amazing Town in the Rock: Setenil de las Bodegas

The Spanish town of Setenil de las Bodegas is perhaps one of the most amazing corners of Andalusia. Its main attraction is the menacing multi-ton rock arches hanging over houses and streets. The first thought that comes to mind when looking at such an original building is: "What if it collapses?"

But the history of Setenil de las Bodegas is reassuring - the basalt rocks have stood unshakable for several million years, and the town itself has been hidden in the rock for more than eight centuries (although, according to some sources, people have lived here for 25,000 years).

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most amazing "white towns" in southern Spain. It is a small, typically Andalusian town with a population of 2,967 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census) covering an area of 82 square kilometers.

Setenil de las Bodegas has long been famous for its unique geographical location: most of the houses are literally cut into the rocks, built by expanding natural caves. The city is so skillfully built between the rocks that it seems like an intricate sculpture invented by some dreamer.

Historical evidence indicates that Setenil de las Bodegas is an ancient settlement. Its inhabitants became famous for their military bravery, they steadfastly defended the city from numerous attacks by Roman soldiers, who in the 1st century AD managed to enter the city only after a 15-day siege.

Scientists believe that the etymology of the name "Setenil" is related to military events: this word comes from septem nihil, which literally means "seven times without result". This was the number of unsuccessful attacks of the Romans, in which the inhabitants of the city managed to withstand.

The second part of the name, "de las Bodegas", appeared later, due to the abundant production of valuable varieties of wine, for which this area is still famous. It is noteworthy that the first vineyards were planted in this area by Christians, in addition to the olive and almond groves that grew here.

Over the centuries, Setenil has also become famous for its meat products, especially chorizo and cerdo sausages, which are made from pork. Piglets themselves graze in large numbers on the hills surrounding the town. In addition to meat, the town is also known for its baked goods, especially biscuits.

The rock protected local residents in ancient times and protects them today: in winter – from piercing winds, and in summer – from scorching heat. The streets of Setenil de las Bodegas always have a comfortable temperature. So air conditioners are clearly not in demand here.
