At the end of the 30s, the world was shaken by the Second World War. It has had an impact on all spheres of human life, even in countries where there was no fighting. The war also affected women's fashion – practical, simple and convenient things came into use in a military way. Blouses, jackets and dresses got square shoulders, and skirts became narrow and stopped at the line just below the knees. But not everyone wanted to enclose themselves in paramilitary clothes – some, on the contrary, switched to cropped tops and shorts.

Some girls from the United States, in protest of the grayness and rigor of military fashion, began to dress up in short shorts and tops, which in the 40s were considered provocative. The fact that even on a picnic or on the beach, only a few could afford before, has become trendy and stylish.

The famous American photographer Stephen Martin immortalized this controversial fashion of the war years in his pictures. He filmed girls in tops and shorts on the streets, in parks, cinemas, shops and even at home. Today it is difficult to believe that these beauties lived at a time when the world was torn apart by a bloody massacre, and it is even more difficult to imagine this to those who have seen photos of Soviet women of the military and the first post-war years.

I want to condemn these girls for frivolity, but do we have the right to do this? It was their youth, the only one and they were very lucky that the war was thundering somewhere far across the ocean.
