Not like everyone else: albino people
Categories: Photo project
By Pictolic https://www.pictolic.com/article/not-like-everyone-else-albino-people.htmlThey are not like everyone else: albino people. They have pale, almost white skin, whitish, as if sun-bleached hair, eyelashes and eyebrows. What made them so was a congenital disease - albinism, or the absence of the pigment that gives color to hair, skin and the iris of the eyes. Very often people are afraid of them, and their fear is masked by rude ridicule. Brazilian photographer Gustavo Lacerda decided to show the beauty of these people: not the same as we usually imagine, peculiar, complex and heavy, but still beauty. The uniqueness and beauty of albino people captivated and inspired Gustavo Lacerda to create a whole project dedicated to them. “Albinism and its strange beauty interested me for a very long time. Since 2009, I have been looking for them all over the world and persuaded them to agree to pose in front of my lens. I wanted them to be in the spotlight at least once, and not, as always, outsiders, ”said the photographer about the history of the creation of the Albino project.

“People are afraid of them, and often mask their fear with ridicule. This behavior causes those suffering from albinism to feel excluded from society, explains Brazilian artist Gustavo Lacerda. And he adds: “That's why for several years I immortalized their faces in photographs. Albinos are beautiful, but it's a difficult beauty."

3. Antonio and Marcela, 2012
Photos of albinos caused a real storm on the Internet. “My photographs evoke extreme emotions. Some are repelled, while others are attracted. I just wanted to capture the incredible fragility and delicacy of albinos. They deserve a tolerant attitude of the society,” summed up Gustavo Lacerda.

4. Helena and Mariana, 2012
Without a doubt, albino people in the portraits of Gustavo Lacerda look like ephemeral magical creatures, and not like scary monsters. Their unusual beauty is simply mesmerizing. This is probably what Gustavo wanted to achieve.

The author hoped that his photo project, which caused a lot of emotions on the network, would at least slightly change the attitude of society towards those who look different from everyone else, especially towards people suffering from albinism.
