By Pictolic https://www.pictolic.com/article/mystery-of-voodoo.htmlPrimitive religions and their rituals are difficult to understand in the Western world. In obedience to our own beliefs, habits, and behaviors, we imagine black magic, psychotropic plants, and mass hysteria—outrageous and even dangerous savagery. Voodoo is the national religion of Benin, revolving around polytheism, has more than 50 million followers in the world (4 times more than Jews or Mormons).
Seeking to dig deeper into the enigmatic belief system, Belgian photographer Frederic Vanwalleghem traveled to Ouidah, Benin, the voodoo capital of West Africa. The result of his research, meetings with local residents and participation in séances was a series of photographs and a short film.
