Until 1936, the Russian name for Tbilisi was Tiflis, but in August of that year, the more native-sounding "tbili"—"warm"—became the official form. Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia and the country's largest city, is located on the banks of the Kura River.

The city's location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, close to lucrative and profitable trade routes, made Tbilisi a bone of contention between rival empires throughout history. To this day, the city remains an important transit point for international energy and trade projects. This rich history is reflected in Tbilisi's vibrant and memorable architecture, which features medieval, classical, Far Eastern, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and contemporary buildings.

Swedish photographer Sten-Åke Stenberg captured a series of stunning images of everyday life in Tbilisi in October 1976.
