Before and after, or Incredible visual effects in the movie "The Martian"

Superheroes would look much less believable, and space movies like The Martian would be much harder to cash in on.
Visual effects studio Moving Picture Company (MPC) recently showed off some of the effects it created while filming The Martian. Oddly enough, but the events taking place on the Red Planet were often filmed using green screens.
However, see for yourself.

Matt Damon might look like he's on Mars...

…but he actually spent most of his time in front of a green screen.

Damon is going for a walk on an arid desert planet...

... but actually walking on the sand on Earth.

Damon's journey doesn't seem so far...

…when you know how things really were.

And it doesn't look so exciting when you know it's not the sky of Mars...

... and, most likely, rafters and beams overhead.

Can you tell what is real and what is fake in this scene?

This is real dirt and plants scattered on the ground.

Was Damon wearing a helmet?

Not completely. The outer glass was added later.

The Martian landscape was filmed in the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan.

But it wasn't as red as in the movie.

This episode was not actually filmed under the night sky...

...and also in the green pavilion.
