41st state: brutal farmers of Montana

If life on a farm seems peaceful to you, away from the hustle and bustle and stress, check out this series of photos. Its author was the American Cynthia Matty Huber. She had always had a special affinity for the unsophisticated farming lifestyle. The photographer showed what life on an American ranch is really like.

Cynthia Matty-Haber has long admired the rough, brutal lifestyle of ranchers. She took these photos over the course of three years, traveling throughout Montana. For the past year she has only worked with one person. John Hoyland's family came to Montana in 1906. John spent his entire life on the farm.

When his parents died, all the farm work fell on him - John became the sole owner of the farm.

Today, Hoyland himself is already in quite an advanced age, and daily work on properties of several hundred hectares is becoming more and more difficult every day.

Despite the hard work, John is happy and does not see himself anywhere other than his native ranch.

Cynthia's work breaks the stereotypes about the ranch as a quiet life away from the hustle and bustle. It shows how difficult and tiring it is to look after a 380-hectare farm every day. But it’s impossible to give up - after all, this land has been called home for 100 years, and there is no other homeland.

However, the realism of the photographs does not kill the romance of rural life - just look at the landscapes and don’t even say that you wouldn’t like to drive through these endless melancholic fields at least once.

The series also contains photographs of other farmers that the photographer took as part of her project.
