Dying villages of Ukraine
Categories: Photo project
By Pictolic https://www.pictolic.com/article/dying-villages-of-ukraine.htmlVictoria Sorochinsky returned to her great-grandmother's homeland to film Ukrainian villages disappearing.
From the author: for centuries, traditions, myths, fairy tales and beliefs of all peoples have been kept and passed down from generation to generation by people living in villages and villages - “people of the earth”. In our time, the tradition of cultivating the land and eating its gifts is becoming a disappearing phenomenon. All over the world, the trend of migration to cities is more and more evident. This is especially noticeable in some countries - for example, in Ukraine.

1. I was born in Ukraine, my great-grandmother and my grandfather lived in one of the small villages near Kyiv.
2. Memories of how I came to them for the summer with the whole family are filled with light and joy. When I returned to this village for the first time after many years of emigration, I was struck by its depressingly lifeless state.
3. Almost all the young have gone to different cities, leaving mostly only old people living out their last days in poverty.
4. Many of them no longer have enough strength to cultivate the land in their gardens.
5. Abandoned and forgotten not only by the state, but often by their own families, they gradually disappear along with their crumbling homes, taking with them traditions and memories.
6. Seeing all this, I realized that I must certainly capture and immortalize the last eyewitnesses of that life, which will soon be known only from history books.
7. During 2009, I visited Ukraine several times and photographed people and their houses in various villages and villages surrounding the capital.
8. Later, in 2010, I was able to go to China and photograph the villages along the Great Wall of China. As far as possible, I plan to continue this project in other countries of the world.
